Liverpool should look to sign Bayern Munich’s Arjen Robben as Sadio Mane prepares to leave Anfield to represent Senegal at the African Cup of Nations.
A £35million summer signing from Southampton, Mane has been in fantastic form this season as he tops the goalscoring charts at Anfield with eight goals in 19 league and cup appearances.
But with Mane set to leave for a month between January and February, former Chelsea ace Robben should be signed for these three reasons:
Out of contract
The 32-year-old left footer has just six months remaining on his current deal and would be available to talk to non-German clubs in January under the Bosman ruling. However, Bayern are unlikely to want to lose their Holland international on a free transfer next summer, and could look to cash in on Robben next month. That could mean the winger will be available at a knock-down price, allowing Liverpool to pounce.
Premier League experience
Robben spent three years at Chelsea where he quickly developed a reputation as one of the best wingers in European football before moving to Real Madrid. In his 104 league and cup appearances for the Blues, Robben had a hand in 42 goals. Scoring 18 of them, the former PSV Eindhoven winger supplied a further 24 goals in assists. The knowledge of England’s top flight would allow Robben to hit the ground running at Anfield.
With Philippe Coutinho currently out injured, Robben’s ability from free-kicks could give the Reds an added attacking dimension from a dead ball. Able to score himself from a free-kick as well as possessing the skill to whip in an inch-perfect corner, Robben’s deliveries could see Jurgen Klopp’s side continue their impressive goalscoring form. Bayern’s number 10 would be a huge coup for Klopp, and would provide adequate cover for the loss of Mane.
In other Liverpool transfer news, Inter Milan are eyeing a loan move for this midfield ace.
