Liverpool scouts have been in attendance at multiple Borussia Dortmund games this season to keep tabs on the progress of Jamie Gittens.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the Reds view Gittens as a potential summer transfer target.

The 20-year-old winger has attracted interest from several Premier League sides as a result of his impressive Bundesliga displays so far this season.

He has scored 11 goals and provided five assists in 31 appearances across all competitions and remains a key part of Niko Kovac's side.

Gittens has also made 11 caps for England's Under-21s, where he has shone alongside Liverpool youngsters Harvey Elliott and Tyler Morton.

Now, Liverpool are prepared to offer him a route back to England for the first time since he left Man City in search of first-team opportunities in 2020.

Liverpool to make Jamie Gittens transfer decision after new concern

Brown recalled watching Gittens play and score for England's Under-21 side during a 7-0 win against Luxembourg on 26 March 2024.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, raised concerns about the winger's consistency, but explained Liverpool's scouts will make their own judgements.

"I remember watching him for England's under-21s," he told Football Insider.

"They won by seven against Luxembourg last year and he got on the scoresheet.

"I didn't know him at the time, he was playing in that inside-left channel.

"Somebody said he was playing in Germany, but based on conversations with people who know about him more than I do, I didn't get the feeling that he's a real standout.

"People were placing the 'might be' label on him, he's got talent but has he got the consistency?

"He seems to be answering some of those questions this season, he's come into Dortmund's team and he's attracting a lot of interest in his performances.

"But where he's of top Premier League quality, I'm not so sure.

"That will be on Liverpool's scouts to work out, because they've been watching him at a few games so far this season over in Germany.

"They'll be working out whether he can be consistent and perform to his best level every week.

"They've done remarkably well in the past with this sort of deal because there were question marks about Cody Gakpo too, and he's proving people wrong this season."

Arsenal plot move to sign Diogo Jota in summer transfer twist

Following the closure of the January transfer window, clubs are already putting plans in place ahead of the summer, and Liverpool will be braced for offers for a number of key stars.

However, the deal will depend on Liverpool's willingness to sell to a direct Premier League rival, which could mean any deal would come at a high price.

Jota has made 21 appearances for Arne Slot's side across all competitions so far this season, scoring eight goals and providing two assists.
