Liverpool could step up their interest in Newcastle star Anthony Gordon after they complete a deal to sign Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz.

That is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that the 24-year-old is being considered among their leading targets.

However, getting deals for both forwards over the line would mean cashing in on at least one of their current attacking options.

Brown told Football Insider on 27 May that Liverpool are prepared to sell Luis Diaz if they can complete a deal for his replacement, amid interest from Barcelona.

Meanwhile, Football Insider exclusively revealed on 22 May that Gordon is on Arne Slot's radar as the Reds are prepared to reignite their interest.

The Newcastle winger came close to a move to Anfield last summer and told friends at the time that he was “very keen” on the switch.

Liverpool eye Anthony Gordon deal after Newcastle latest

Brown told Football Insider last month that Newcastle could accept "huge" offers for Gordon amid ongoing interest from the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal.

The former scout, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted Gordon could arrive as well as Wirtz if players are sold this summer.

"Anthony Gordon is still on their radar," he told Football Insider.

"He's been one of the top names for Liverpool for a while.

"He's a Liverpool lad, was at Everton before, and they know him very well.

"They've been talking about Wirtz as well, and it looks like that deal is going to happen and they're getting closer to an agreement there.

"But that isn't going to stop them having a look at Gordon.

"They've got a few players there, Diaz, Gakpo, Nunez, and more who could leave and those sales would open to door for Gordon to come in.

"If they keep those players, they won't need both Gordon and Wirtz.

"But if they don't, Gordon is a player they're considering to come in as a direct replacement for the current attacking options, who Slot hasn't been convinced on."

Angelo Stiller, Milos Kerkez - Arne Slot lines up new signings

As well as their interest in new attacking options, Slot's side are aiming to improve all over the pitch to build on their success in his first season.

Football Insider revealed on 24 May that Liverpool want to sign Stuttgart midfielder Angelo Stiller to resolve the issues they've had in the middle.

Stiller has a £50million release clause in his contract which has inspired interest from Europe’s top clubs, with the Reds and Real Madrid the latest to join the race.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool will meet Milos Kerkez's asking price after he emerged as their top option at left-back.
