Medical expert: Liverpool may have misdiagnosed Oxlade-Chamberlain - he could have suffered 'fracture'

X-ray imaging is “never 100 per cent” reliable and there is a chance Alex Oxlade Chamberlain’s injury is worse than feared at Liverpool = and he could have suffered a “fracture”.

That is the view of injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Oxlade-Chamberlain went down clutching his ankle and was replaced with 15 minutes to go in the 3-0 win over Brentford last Sunday (16 January).

Per the Daily Mail yesterday (19 January), Liverpool assistant Pep Lijnders confirmed tonight’s League Cup clash against Arsenal would come too soon for the midfielder but he is “really hoping that he will make the weekend.”

That update came after Jurgen Klopp revealed that the extent of Oxlade-Chamberlain’s would be revealed by imaging.

Dinnery does not anticipate that the 28-year-old is facing an extended spell on the sidelines but did warn that imaging is not always foolproof.

“Imaging is never 100 per cent,” he told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It could come back inconclusive. You can’t rule out a second imaging later in the week if there’s a lot of swelling around the joint.

“That might just make a definitive diagnosis a little bit difficult, although the club will have a fairly good idea what’s going on.

“If it’s just a minor sprain, you can’t rule out him playing within seven to 14 days. After the winter break, you’d expect to see him return.

“If it’s more severe damage, you’re going to extend that timeline. There is a possibility that you can pull a little bit of bone off, that’s an avulsion fracture.

“That would have a significant impact, but there isn’t anything to suggest that at this period of time.

“Ultimately, I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t back after the winter break.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain has two goals and two assists in 25 appearances this season.

He netted Liverpool’s opener five minutes before he was forced to withdraw against Brentford.
