By Alex Taylor

Napoli have completed the signing of Liverpool target Piotr Zielinski from Udinese, the club announced on Thursday evening.

The Italian club have won the race for a central midfielder who was trailed by the Merseyside giants all summer.

Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed on his website at the end of June that the Poland international was set to complete a medical with Liverpool following his team’s elimination from Euro 2016.

But the deal hit the buffers, Liverpool were unable to finalise the terms of an agreement with Udinese and Napoli stole in to win the race.

The Serie A big hitters announced on their official Twitter account on Thursday night that Zielinksi was a Napoli player.

Sky Sports have claimed on their website that Napoli will pay around £8.5million for Zielinski.

Liverpool have previously had an offer of £11.75million for the Poland international rejected by Giuseppe Iachini’s side.

The midfielder has spent the last two seasons on loan at Empoli and scored five goals and provided four assists in his 35 league appearances in 2015-16.

Despite missing out in the 22-year-old, Jurgen Klopp will not be too disheartened as he already has an array of central midfield options, including Emre Can, James Milner, Jordan Henderson, Lucas and Georginio Wijnaldum.

Klopp has also been busy in the transfer window securing the signatures of Sadio Mane, Georginio Wijnaldum, Joel Matip, Loris Karius, Marko Grujic and Alex Maninnger this summer.
