Liverpool tipped to sign 'statement striker' after 'massive' £51m news - pundit

Gabby Agbonlahor has tipped Liverpool to sign a “big statement” striker this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England forward insisted Liverpool need to keep up with Man City after they announced a deal for Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland.

Man City confirmed on Tuesday (10 May) that they have “reached an agreement in principle” with Dortmund for the 21-year-old.

Sky Sports reported the same day City triggered Haaland’s £51.1m million release clause to complete the deal.

The Premier League champions have operated without a conventional striker this season and Liverpool have done the same with Sadio Mane playing as a false nine in recent weeks.

And Agbonlahor has claimed this has been exposed recently and Liverpool must act in the transfer market to ensure they have a clinical hitman leading the line.

He told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley: “I think Liverpool need to look at what Man City have done with Haaland.

“Liverpool need to make a big statement signing with a striker.

“It has worked with Mane, Jota, Salah and Diaz rotating as a front three but they need to go and get a striker.

“Man City are going to take it to a new level with Haaland and Liverpool need to react to that otherwise next season is going to be tough for them. Haaland is massive”

Haaland has scored 61 goals in 69 Bundesliga goals for Dortmund since his move from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2020.

The Norway international’s father Alf-Inge played 47 times for City between 2000 and 2003.
