Liverpool tipped to sign 'world-class' midfielder as Bellingham alternative revealed by Ornstein - pundit
Kevin Phillips has tipped Liverpool to sign a “world-class” centre-midfielder this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the 2000 European Golden Shoe winner stressed the importance of a midfield signing at Anfield with Jordan Henderson, 31, and James Milner, 36, “another year older”.
According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein (7 January), the Reds want to strengthen in the middle of the park with Monaco’s Aurelien Tchouameni, under consideration.
Tchouameni, 21, is also said to be of interest to Manchester United.
Milner’s contract at Anfield expires at the end of the season, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita have 18 months left on their deals.
When asked by Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs for his assessment of Liverpool’s midfield, Phillips said:

“Milner and Henderson will be another year older so I think it’s vital they get another midfielder in.
“There’s been a lot of talk about Jude Bellingham. He is someone who could be the long-term future of that midfield. He could be one that comes in.
“Milner has been an incredible servant but his time will come eventually. For a club of Liverpool’s size and the position they are in, they need a world-class centre-midfielder.
“Jude Bellingham is one player who certainly fits the mould. It’s an area they need to address in the summer, 100 per cent, and I think they will.”
As revealed by Football Insider (22 December), Liverpool have a strong interest in Bellingham ahead of a potential summer move.
The England international has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract at Borussia Dortmund.
