Liverpool plan to hold behind-the-scenes talks with Mohamed Salah as they look to thrash out an agreement over a new contract.

This is according to former Man United and Blackburn chief scout Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected within the game, as he exclusively told Football Insider that they want to make a breakthrough in contract talks as soon as possible.

Liverpool's current sticking point revolves around their policy of only offering one-year extensions to players over 30, while Salah is looking for a longer deal.

However, Brown has now insisted they will be willing to bend their usual policy given the 32-year-old's exceptional quality and importance to their side.

Talks with the winger are set to take place before the end of the month, as they plan to make new progress in talks ahead of the January transfer window.

Salah is believed to be keen to agree terms to stay at Anfield, but will also stand firm in his demands.

Liverpool plan to hold Mohamed Salah contract talks imminently

Liverpool are in a difficult situation with Salah, Van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold all out of contract at the end of the year, but remain confident of tying all three down.

Brown, who has a wealth of experience dealing with players and agents at the top level after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted the club have made a rod for their own backs with their contract policy.

"I'm confident they'll reach an agreement at some stage," he told Football Insider.

"I'm always amazed that clubs build bridges that they can't cross. There's always an exception. It's an issue they've made for themsleves.

"They want to only offer one-year contracts for the older players, but Salah has to be an exception.

"He's so important to that club and such a good player that you have to break your own rules.

"From what I hear, they're going to speak to Salah behind the scenes with the offer of a two-year deal.

"They won't go any higher than that, it won't be three years for example, because of this one-year rule they've put in place for themselves.

"Then, the ball will be in his court and it will be up to him whether he wants to agree.

"Liverpool have got to manage the situation properly, and like we said with Van Dijk, it's one they want to have done sooner rather than later and possibly before January if they can."
