Liverpool and Manchester United could do battle over midfielder Cesc Fabregas in the summer if Chelsea decide to sell him, according to a report.
The Daily Express claim that the Reds want to lure the £30million-rated ace to Anfield as manager Jurgen Klopp wants his experience, but face tough competition from long-term admirers United.
It is understood that the Spain international still has two years left on his Chelsea deal and is on a £170,000-a-week contract, but has only started 10 Premier League games so far this season.
The report details that AC and Inter Milan are interested in the 29-year-old’s signature, but he doest not want to move to Italy and could only be persuaded to leave Stamford Bridge for another English club.
The central midfielder does not want to make any decision until the end of the season and it is not yet concrete where he will be playing his football next campaign.
Fabregas has become renowned for his number of assists during his career and has 106 in the Premier League alone.
He is a technically gifted player that has proved himself at Arsenal, Barcelona and Chelsea, who he joined for £30million in the summer of 2014.
The playmaker has had to make do with a more bit-part role for the Blues this season, but has still managed to play a vital role in their push for the title.
He has scored six goals and supplied 12 assists so far this campaign across all competitions, and brings a great level of composure to the side when he is on the pitch.
Liverpool may be keen to reinforce their midfield options in the transfer window, with Lucas’ contract set to expire, Jordan Henderson’s injury concerns and reported interest in Philippe Coutinho.
Football Insider verdict:
Chelsea would be completely foolish to let Fabregas go in the summer, but Liverpool should certainly make sure they snap him up if he becomes available. The 29-year-old has found himself unlucky this campaign, with Blues manager Antonio Conte preferring powerhouses N’Golo Kante and Nemanja Matic in his central midfield positions for the majority. However, Fabregas is still one of the most technically gifted players in the division and can dictate games. He has the quality to walk into most side’s in the Premier League and would be a colossal signing for Liverpool. The £30million price tag being mentioned would certainly be worth paying and he would be able to dictate games for the Merseyside club, something the Anfield fans have not seen since the days of Xabi Alonso.
In other Liverpool transfer news, Real Madrid could make a move to sign the club’s central midfielder.
