Liverpool told to complete two marquee signings as near-£100m deal revealed by Ornstein - Phillips
Liverpool need “one or two top signings” to truly challenge for the title again this season, according to Kevin Phillips.
The 2000 European Golden Shoe winner, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the Reds are falling behind their rivals following the transfers done and nearly done in the current window.
Manchester City added Jack Grealish to their ranks for a British record £100million fee on Thursday and remain keen on Spurs striker Harry Kane.
Manchester United have agreed deals for Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer, while David Ornstein revealed on August 7th that Chelsea are on the verge of completing the £97.5million signing of Romelu Lukaku.
Phillips expects the return of long-term injury absentees Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez to have a “huge” impact on Liverpool but he suggested it will not be enough to regain the title.
“I think Liverpool can challenge for the title this season but they will need that front three to step up to the plate again,” he told Football Insider‘s Dylan Childs. “They were off it last season.

“Virgil Van Dijk and Gomez will be back which will make a huge difference. That back four will be solid.
“I think they will be there or thereabouts but the worry is that Man City and Man United have strengthened really well.
“Chelsea look like they’re going to get Lukaku through the door so they will definitely be in the race. On paper, Chelsea have got one of the best squads in the league.
“Liverpool do need to make one or two top signings to really compete with the others.”
