Kieran Maguire tells Liverpool to complete 'brilliant' £36.2m deal after Salah development

Liverpool should keep Mohamed Salah for another two years on a £300,000-a-week contract.

So says finance expert Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the in-form Egyptian superstar forward.

The Independent reported on 5 October that Salah wants a new deal worth between £300,000 and £380,000 per week.

That would break Liverpool’s wage structure, which is built around parity among the club’s top earners.

The 29-year-old, who has nine goals and three assists in nine matches this season, is under contract at Anfield until the summer of 2023.

Maguire insists that Liverpool must avoid being locked into a contract with an ageing player for too long.

“They are used to paying competitive wages,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Liverpool had the second-highest wage bill in the Premier League based on the most recent accounts.

“If they have any sense, they’ll look at the total cost of the player over the next three or four years. That cost is transfer fee plus wages.

“Liverpool need to extend the contract for a sensible period of time and not lock themselves into those wages for too long.

“If they pay him £300,000-a-week, that’s £36.2m for two years. If they get another two years out of him for that price, that’s got to be brilliant value.

Say they tie themselves to a five-year contract, that would likely be less beneficial.

“There’s no reason he can’t play past 35 or 36, but we do see players’ careers begin to taper around that time.”
