Liverpool prioritise £20million Gotze summer signing (Sky)

By Coral Barry

Liverpool are interested in signing Mario Gotze this summer, according to Sky Sports.

Gotze, 23, has been repeatedly linked with a move to Anfield and a reunion with his Borussia Dortmund coach and now Liverpool manager, Jurgen Klopp.

Football Insider revealed that Liverpool are hopeful of securing the German’s services for as little as £20million in the summer.

Sky Sports are now reporting that Gotze is unsettled at Bayern Munich after making just one start in all competitions since October.

The midfielder is said to be unsure about his future in Munich with current manager Pep Guardiola moving to England himself in the summer to link up with new club, Manchester City and incoming boss Carlo Ancelotti due to take over the reigns at Bayern.

Sky Sports claim that the change in management and the prospect of a reunion with the man who gave him his first Dortmund debut at 18, has caused Gotze to revaluate his situation.

This has put Liverpool on red alert and Sky Sports report that the Merseysiders are ready to test the reigning Bundesliga champions’ resolve with a summer bid.

Gotze has spent a majority of the season either in the treatment room or warming the Bayern bench and as a result his price tag has significantly fallen.

The versatile forward was rated by Bayern Munich in the £50million bracket after his first season at the club ended with him scoring the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, but Football Insider understand that the German giants will no longer demand such a fee with Gotze entering the final year of his contract.

Gotze’s value has dropped markedly in the subsequent two years as he has struggled to establish himself as an integral member of Pep Guardiola’s side.

Decision maker: Ancelotti will take over at Gotze’s club Bayern in the summer

A Germany source has told Football Insider that the combination of Gotze’s contract, form and diminished status at Bayern mean the club are unlikely to be able to command a fee of more than £20million in the summer.

In turn, the Germany World Cup winner has admitted in the past he could leave Bayern at the end of the season and has spoken of his excellent relationship with Klopp.

Incoming Bayern manager Ancelotti will have a say in Gotze’s future but the player is in a strong position to push for a summer transfer.

The scorer of the winning goal in Germany’s 2014 World Cup final win over Argentina had a terrific record at Dortmund under Klopp, scoring 31 goals and supplying 44 assists from 116 appearances.

In other Liverpool transfer news, Klopp has already begun to look towards a summer revamp with his scouts checking out a potential £12million player.
