A deal for Barcelona’s Ousmane Dembele at a knockdown price would represent excellent business for Liverpool.
That is according to ex-Premier League shot-stopper Paddy Kenny, speaking exclusively to Football Insider after Spanish outlet Sport reported that the 23-year-old is set to be available for between £43million and £52m this summer.
Though he has struggled at Barca, the winger was described as a “phenomenon” by Lionel Messi upon his arrival at the Nou Camp.
The Catalant giants paid £96.8m for his services in 2017, with top-ups potentially taking the fee to £135.5m.
Kenny claims that Dembele’s original fee is proof of his talent and insists that he would be a “quality” signing for Liverpool.
He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “They’ve knocked £50m off his price and are willing to cut their losses.
“But the fact they thought he was worth that at one point tells you all you need to know, really. He definitely has quality.
“I think £44m in this day and age is not a lot of money. This would be a good move for them.
“He’s still young and definitely worth signing if you can get him at that price.
“Wages are the only concern. But if you get him in for cheaper than he’s actually worth, that’ll even itself out eventually.”
Liverpool recently released their financial results for the 2019-20 campaign.
FSG sanctioned £325m in wage expenditure, the second-highest spend in the Premier League after champions-elect Man City.
