Xherdan Shaqiri will join a mid-table Premier League side like Wolves – but suitors must be wary of the Liverpool star’s shoddy work rate.
That is according to ex-Premier League ace Noel Whelan, speaking exclusively after Football Insider revealed that Shaqiri told his agent to find him a new club.
Serie A sides Roma and Lazio as well as La Liga title contenders Sevilla are all interested in Shaqiri, 29.
He is understood to want more game time after starting just six matches for Liverpool in 2020-21.
Whelan has no doubts about the 89-time Switzerland international’s technical ability but questioned his work ethic.
“I think he’s a player who definitely has something to offer,” he told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs.
“He’s got huge talent but it depends on what style of play you’re looking for in a player.
“Is he going to be a worker and give you that excellent work rate? Probably not. But he’s a luxury player and he’s definitely worth taking a chance on.
“Where would he end up going? You’re probably talking middle of the table. Maybe Wolves, that might suit a player like him.
“But I doubt the top six would take a chance on him. He’s got a great left foot but he hasn’t been playing regularly. He’s been a bit-part player.
“You look at the intensity of the Premier League now and it’s his work rate that I’m questioning. You need the off-the-ball side of things too.”
Liverpool signed Shaqiri from Stoke City in 2018, triggering his £13million release clause to bring him to Anfield.
He has featured 62 times for Jurgen Klopp’s side, scoring eight goals and laying on nine assists.
