Mac Allister joined Liverpool from Brighton in 2023, just six months after he had lifted the World Cup.

After spending the entirety of Argentina's opening game loss to Saudi Arabia on the bench, Lionel Scaloni brought Mac Allister into the starting lineup.

It would be one of the best decisions of his career and one that undoubtedly helped him lift the World Cup.

The midfielder started every game remaining, playing 120 minutes against the Netherlands in the quarter-final and 116 against France in the final.

Mac Allister scored against Poland and assisted Angel Di Maria's goal in that iconic final, and has been recognised as an integral part of the team ever since.

Monday's display saw that ratified again, with the 27-year-old misplacing just four passes and completing four tackles, four recoveries and winning five duels.

Argentinian outlet TycSports gave him a seven out of 10, and wrote: "A good match, this time playing as a central midfielder, more focused on a fixed position than rotating between attacking and defensive duties.

"Argentina needed him there today, and Colo responded very well, especially in his understanding with Enzo [Fernandes]. It's also important to understand that some flashes of brilliance can go unnoticed when the required roles aren't those that offer the most dazzling performances."

Mac Allister's contract situation analysed amid early concerns

In the case of Mac Allister, Liverpool are rapidly approaching the decision time.

The midfielder's contract expires in two years, with this summer representing their best chance to extract a strong fee if he will not sign a new contract.

There is little to suspect that Mac Allister wants to leave this summer, but players can be unpredictable and Liverpool must prepare for all scenarios.

Leave it to next year, and the Reds will find themselves forced to accept a lower offer or be willing to let the World Cup winner walk for free.
