Andy Robertson has extended his support to Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk after he continued a strong start to the season with the Netherlands.

Robertson and Van Dijk each formed part of a formidable Liverpool defence before the Scot's Anfield exit in the summer.

Tottenham snapped him up at the end of his Reds contract in June, with Van Dijk approaching a similar dilemma at the end of this season.

The 35-year-old is out of contract at Liverpool in June 2027, and talks over a new extension are yet to begin with Anfield chiefs.

Van Dijk recently proved his everlasting quality by captaining his country to an unbeaten first four Nations League fixtures while winning his 100th cap on Sunday against Serbia.

Robertson achieved the same feat for Scotland over the weekend, with the pair interacting on Instagram after their respective achievements.

Andy Robertson congratulates Virgil van Dijk amid Liverpool uncertainty

Van Dijk is not showing any signs of slowing down in his mid-30s, with 90 minutes played in all six of Liverpool's Premier League and Champions League fixtures so far this season.

His impressive start to the campaign has only continued on international duty, with four consecutive 90s for the Netherlands in the last two weeks and a goal in their 2-2 draw with Greece.

Van Dijk's milestone 100th appearance for the Oranje saw him celebrated before and after their 2-1 win over Serbia on Sunday.

The Reds captain posted a series of pictures from the game on Instagram, to which Spurs man Robertson replied: "Congratulations brother" with a red heart emoji.

'He's still an attractive player' - Real Madrid set sights on Van Dijk after Liverpool 'update'

What is the latest on Van Dijk's contract situation?

Van Dijk is clearly key to Andoni Iraola's plans this season, but his long-term future remains unclear as Liverpool plan to reshape their centre-back options.

The Reds' recent signings of Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are proof that they are planning for life without the Dutchman in the years to come.

His time at Anfield may not be coming to an end quite so soon, though, as sources have exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Iraola is keen to see Van Dijk's contract extended if he continues to impress in the coming weeks and months.

Real Madrid and long-time admirer Jose Mourinho are keeping tabs on his situation, but Liverpool are likely to offer him a new deal if nothing changes.
