Everything Jurgen Klopp has said about 'once-in-a-century' Florian Wirtz as Liverpool star welcomes new manager
Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp could take charge of the Germany national team after Julian Nagelsmann was dismissed.
The ex-Bayern Munich head coach was sacked following his team's exit at the World Cup round of 32 stage on Monday at the hands of Paraguay.
Klopp, 59, is currently the global sports director for the Red Bull group, having left the Reds in 2024 after almost nine years in charge.
Florian Wirtz will be among the German's players he would oversee in his new role and he will be tasked with bringing the best out of the 23-year-old, who has struggled in his first year at Liverpool.
The midfielder joined last summer in a deal from Bayer Leverkusen that could well reach £116million.
But he scored just five goals and provided three assists in his opening Premier League season, failing to score his first until the end of December.
Everything Jurgen Klopp has said about Florian Wirtz
During his time at Liverpool, Klopp oversaw the development and progression of countless stars.
Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho - the list goes on.
The German was and is an expert in the type of coaching that allows a young player to come out of their skin and show their best on the pitch.
While, due to the frequency of international camps, there will be a limit to his influence, Liverpool fans will hope that Klopp can have a similar impact on Wirtz.
Of course, that is not to diminish the job of Andoni Iraola, either, who also has a strong record of coaching younger players.
"[Wirtz is] a once-in-a-century talent, and at some point he’ll show that in every game again, as he did at Leverkusen," Klopp said in October.
"[He has] a stable environment at Liverpool, and the club is great in moments like these. If anyone’s worried—you don’t have to! You can stop.”
Klopp spoke about how he would utilise Wirtz
Throughout Germany's participation in the World Cup this summer, Klopp has been a pundit for MagentaTV.
He has spoken several times about Wirtz, but had a lot to say after the opening game against Curacao.
The midfielder had picked up an assist for Felix Nmecha's opener and created four chances throughout the game, in what was a strong display.
Klopp wanted more, however. "I was incredibly grateful to him. I thought he was really, really good, especially in how tactically disciplined he was,” the former Liverpool boss said.
"But now we have to play through him. And that’s on us. He can’t keep dropping back to his own penalty area, pick up the ball and do everything himself.
"We have to find situations where we can use him in those positions, because his positioning creates so much space for Nmecha, for Adeyemi, for everyone making runs into those areas.
"'Sacrificing himself’ is completely the wrong word, but he puts himself at the service of the team. I really liked that. That’s why I thought it was a really good game.”
Now, it appears that Klopp is set to get his own hands on Wirtz, in news that can only bring good things for the player and Liverpool.
