Liverpool could be set to lose £15million in prize money if they fail to improve on their current position in the Premier League table.

Arne Slot’s side have endured a disappointing campaign, with Champions League football yet to be secured heading into the final game of the season against Brentford on Sunday (24 May).

Liverpool currently sit fifth in the Premier League, three points above sixth-place Bournemouth, who are preparing to take on Nottingham Forest.

The Merseyside giants earned £175m in merit payments after being crowned English champions last season.

However, Liverpool’s prize money is set to drop significantly this season, with Newcastle United banking £160m for finishing fifth in 2024-25, marking a £15m difference between the two positions.

How Liverpool have mitigated Premier League financial blow

Liverpool were the pre-season favourites to retain the Premier League following their heavy spending last summer.

The Reds brought in almost £450m worth of talent, but several of their new signings have so far failed to live up to expectations at Anfield.

Liverpool’s accounts for last season

While their performances domestically have fallen well below par, Liverpool did progress deeper in Europe than last season.

Slot’s side finished top of the league phase in the Champions League in 2024-25 before being knocked out by eventual winners PSG in the last 16, bringing in £82m worth of prize money.

However, Liverpool have banked £94m from the elite European club competition this season, having this time reached the quarter-finals before suffering defeat once again against PSG, who are set to take on Arsenal in the final.

That improved performance in Europe will go some way towards mitigating the loss in Premier League merit payments for the campaign.

Why Arsenal are set to blow Liverpool away financially

Liverpool have drastically improved their financial situation in recent years following an upturn in revenue.

The Merseysiders’ turnover increased from £614m in 2023-24 to £703m, which was the highest total in the top flight last season.

However, Arsenal are expected to surpass that number following their impressive performances this season.

Mikel Arteta’s side have been crowned Premier League champions after extending their lead over second-place Manchester City to four points heading into the final game of the campaign.

The Gunners’ revenue surged from £616m in 2023-24 to £691m last season, but it is believed they could now break Man City’s top-flight record of £715m with a victory over PSG in the Champions League final.
