Stefan Borson: This is how Liverpool smashed club record after ‘impressive’ documents analysed

Liverpool have recorded an “impressive” growth in commercial revenue after releasing their accounts for last season. 

That is according to former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Reds have increased their commercial income by £100million over the past five years. 

Arne Slot’s side published their accounts for 2024-25 on Companies House last week, showing their turnover surged from £614m in 2023-24 to £703m last season. 

Liverpool’s financial situation improved dramatically after claiming the Premier League title in Slot’s first campaign at Anfield. 

How Liverpool recorded 'very good' financial numbers

Liverpool’s broadcast revenue increased significantly from £204m to £264m in 2024-25 after being crowned champions. 

Meanwhile, commercial income improved from £308m to £323m, while matchday revenue also received a boost from £102m to £116m. 

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson discussed how Liverpool broke their club-record revenue last season. 

“They're obviously very good numbers,” said Borson. 

“They're not completely new information because of course we had good indications of where they were finishing up from the various reports that we've seen so far. 

“What tends to happen these days is that you get the Deloitte Money League report in early January, which gives you the headline numbers in terms of revenue and wages, and then you get this top up of information from Uefa in their Landscape Report. 

“That one tends to include a whole load of data that the clubs would rather the outside world didn't have, so that's becoming increasingly a source of controversy for the clubs. 

“I think probably next season we'll start to see less information coming out that way, annoyingly, because it's quite good in terms of getting some of the different information that's not available in the accounts. 

“But what it means is that when they do actually formally come out, there's not huge amounts of new information within there.” 

How Liverpool are matching London-based clubs' matchday income

Borson revealed Liverpool’s numbers are likely to be close to £700m again this season despite their challenges on the pitch. 

“Liverpool broke £700m for the first time last season,” said Borson. 

“You would think they will be pretty close again this season. Their matchday revenue is now competing with the London clubs, which is a great endorsement given that they generally will have lower revenue per seat in Liverpool. 

“Commercially, they continue to perform very well. If you look at where it's gone from sort of in the last five years, it's up 50 per cent. They've added £100m since 2021, so that's impressive.” 

Liverpool currently sit sixth in the Premier League table, but they are level on points with fifth-place Chelsea after 29 matches.
