Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has responded to Liverpool after they announced Andoni Iraola as their new manager.

Iraola has signed a two-year contract to replace Arne Slot at Anfield following a successful three-year spell at Bournemouth.

The Spaniard delivered European football to Bournemouth during his final season in charge, and was known for playing attacking football.

Slot’s style of play at Liverpool was criticised this season, and Mohamed Salah even publicly said that he wanted the club to return to being a “heavy metal attacking team.”

Iraola has two months to prepare his squad before the Premier League season begins, although many of his new team will be on international duty at this summer’s World Cup.

Liverpool trio approve of Andoni Iraola appointment

Posting on Instagram, Liverpool revealed their first picture of Iraola as their manager, with the 43-year-old holding up the club's 2026-27 home shirt.

Liverpool captioned the post: “We can confirm Andoni Iraola has agreed a deal to become the club’s new head coach, ahead of the 2026-26 season.”

Former Liverpool defender Carragher commented, “good luck gaffer,” with a fingers crossed and a red love heart emoji.

Meanwhile, current Liverpool stars Dominik Szoboszlai, Conor Bradley and rarely-seen striker Federico Chiesa all liked the post as they look forward to working under their new boss.

Liverpool missed out on managerial target

Slot had been under scrutiny at Liverpool for months before the club decided to sack the Dutchman a week after the Premier League season finished.

Former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso was available from January to replace Slot, but the club did not make their move, and the Spaniard has now joined Chelsea.

Liverpool owners FSG and Richard Hughes in 'disagreement' over Andoni Iraola appointment

Keith Wyness, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, believes that Iraola was not Liverpool’s first choice to replace Slot, and that sporting director Richard Hughes may have fallen out with the owners over the appointment process.

Hughes had appointed Iraola as Bournemouth boss back in 2023, and would have been behind bringing him to Anfield.

As Liverpool prepares for a busy summer of transfer activity, Iraola may raid his former club to help strengthen Liverpool’s squad.
