Liverpool turn attention to four more signings as Victor Munoz completes medical after agreeing deal
Liverpool are completing the signing of Victor Munoz from Osasuna after triggering the £34.6million release clause in his contract.
The 22-year-old enjoyed a superb season in Spain and was in advanced negotiations to join Newcastle United as they look to replace Anthony Gordon, but the Magpies' deal has been hijacked by their Premier League rivals.
The left-sided winger made his debut for Spain in March and was selected for Luis de la Fuente's World Cup squad, with Liverpool staff at their Atlanta camp to conduct the medical.
Munoz, a right footer who operates on the left flank, will be the Reds' first signing since the appointment of Andoni Iraola earlier this month and is expected to sign a six-year contract.
The Spaniard was hired to replace Arne Slot, when he was dismissed following a hugely disappointing season.
Sources say Liverpool are also pursuing a central midfielder, centre-back, right-back and right winger, where they want a replacement for Mohamed Salah.
Why have Liverpool signed Victor Munoz?
Munoz began his youth career in Barcelona's La Masia academy, before joining Damm and later Real Madrid.
Last summer, the winger left the Spanish giants to join Osasuna and has enjoyed a breakthrough season.
With seven goals and five assists across all competitions, the 22-year-old has emerged among the brightest attacking talents in La Liga.
And with Liverpool's crop of wide men already having lost Mohamed Salah and with Federico Chiesa also likely to leave, Munoz is set to play a significant role next season.
With devastating pace and serious power, the youngster has drawn some stylistic comparisons to Luis Diaz.
Using his low centre of gravity to keep the ball close to his feet, Munoz racked up 75 successful dribbles in La Liga this season, completing 2.53 per 90 minutes.
The forward also won 1.82 fouls and 5.63 duels every 90 minutes, while getting off an impressive 2.73 shots.
Munoz created 27 chances in La Liga, and only two big chances, but his 3.24 expected goals should have returned more than just two assists.
Andoni Iraola is the perfect manager for Munoz
Not only will Munoz have a young Spanish manager to work with at Liverpool - Iraola has a proven track record of improving young forwards.
Eli Junior Kroupi is the most recent example, with the 19-year-old making history as the first teenager to score 13 goals in their debut Premier League campaign.
But Antoine Semenyo and Justin Kluivert are also among those to benefit from his coaching during his time at Bournemouth.
Munoz will hope that he can become Iraola's next success story, as Liverpool look to kick off their summer in a flurry.
