Liverpool's chances of paying Chelsea's Malo Gusto price tag in January revealed

Malo Gusto did not move to Liverpool after they were priced out of an approach by Chelsea on deadline day, sources have told Football Insider.

Reports this week have claimed that Liverpool made a late offer to Chelsea to sign Gusto before the summer window closed.

They were keen to agree a loan deal for the Frenchman, who was linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge earlier in the window.

Liverpool explored a right-back addition so late in the summer after Jeremie Frimpong's tough start to the new season.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Chelsea's lofty £75million price tag of Gusto ultimately meant a deal did not go ahead.

The clubs were unable to agree on the terms of a move, with Liverpool keen on a loan with an option to buy, while Chelsea stood firm on an outright sale or loan with an obligation to buy.

Gusto impressed from right-back last season as he registered nine goal contributions in 56 appearances.

He is set to remain a key man under new boss Xabi Alonso, hence why the Blues were only keen to part ways for such a lofty fee.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "I think it was more a late query to see if there's any chance of Chelsea allowing Gusto to leave, but I think Liverpool were looking to do a loan deal with maybe an option to buy.

"Chelsea's preference was a permanent sale, whether that be a fee on deadline day or maybe a loan with a mandatory purchase clause in there. That's something Liverpool weren't willing to do and obviously Chelsea then were happy to keep Malo Gusto.

"Chelsea's price tag was quite prohibitive for not just Liverpool, but also there was talk of Manchester City being interested early in the window, and they weren't going to get anywhere near that £75million valuation that Chelsea had on Gusto's head, so I can't see anybody willing to pay that in January either."

Liverpool's late summer business was dominated by talk of Gakpo potentially heading to Man City to make way for another attacking signing.

The Dutchman ultimately failed to seal a move, but sources have revealed to Football Insider that Iraola had no plans to lose Gakpo and still views him as a key part of his side.

He has been named in their squad lists for the Premier League and Champions League after starting both of their games so far this season.
