Luis Diaz and Harvey Elliott react as Liverpool share Wataru Endo news
Liverpool have sent a message to midfielder Wataru Endo after confirmed news of his retirement from international football.
Due to a foot injury, the 33-year-old will now not be captaining Japan at this summer's World Cup, in a crushing late blow to Endo and his country.
Despite only making 12 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions this season, Endo would have been expected to start for Japan in their opening World Cup match against the Netherlands.
Endo's status as a fringe player at Liverpool means the midfielder could depart the club this summer.
With only a year left remaining on his contract, it is unlikely that Liverpool will offer Endo a new deal to extend his stay at Anfield.
New manager Andoni Iraola faces a rebuild of his squad this summer, with key players like Mohamed Salah, Andy Robertson and Ibrahima Konate having already left the club.
Liverpool confirm Wataru Endo retirement
Upon the news that Endo had called time on his international career, Liverpool shared a message of support on their Instagram page.
Liverpool posted: "Wataru Endo has withdrawn from Japan’s World Cup squad due to injury, and announced his retirement from international football.
"Keep your head up Wata," alongside a love heart emoji.
Current and former Liverpool stars including Luis Diaz, Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah all liked the post.
Fellow Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is expected to leave Liverpool this summer, with former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown revealing to Football Insider that the 25-year-old is prepared to snub Premier League interest in favour of a move abroad.
Liverpool reveal Curtis Jones asking price
Inter Milan are one team pursuing a move for Jones, and have reportedly already had a bid rejected for the Liverpool star.
Liverpool have valued Jones at around £35million, with the midfielder seeking guaranteed game time elsewhere.
Jones was predominantly used off the bench by Arne Slot, or filled in at right-back when required for the injured Jeremie Frimpong.
The sale of Jones would count as pure profit for Liverpool under financial rules as he is a homegrown academy graduate.
