Marc Guehi to Liverpool 'back on' as Man City face 'immediate' relegation threat

Liverpool could take advantage of Manchester City's situation by reigniting their interest in Marc Guehi in the near future.

The Reds are among a number of clubs across world football who have been placed on high alert after being informed that City may be found guilty of 114 financial breaches.

While no announcement has been made by the Premier League, there have been suggestions that punishments may include sever points deductions or potential relagtion.

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on Man City's situation in case Guehi becomes available.

Liverpool were disappointed to miss out on the 26-year-old last summer, before he joined Man City in January, and he has been outstanding since his move to the Etihad.

With the addition of a new centre-back still high on Andoni Iraola's shortlist, any possibility that he could be allowed to leave Man City could tempt the Reds to pounce.

Could Man City be forced to sell players?

Football Insider revealed on 28 September that Man City's star players are being kept in the dark about how their futures would look if they are hit with relegation from the Premier League.

Sources say that none of the first-team players at the Etihad have relegation clauses in their contracts, but they could look to move on rather than stay in the second tier.

If Guehi is among those who seeks a move away, Liverpool are poised to reignite their interest, and could finally reach an agreement to bring him to Anfield.

"If Man City are hit with immediate relegation, it's going to be hard to keep players around," Brown told Football Insider.

"Ultimately, they want to be playing at the top level, in the Premier League, in the Champions League, so dropping into the second, third or fourth tier isn't going to match those demands.

"If that happens, they are at serious risk of losing key players, when you look at the likes of Erling Haaland, Rayan Cherki, Ruben Dias and all of the others.

"Marc Guehi for example, if Man City are relegated, there is every chance Liverpool could look to take advantage of that situation and that move could be back on.

"They were disappointed to miss out on him before, they think very highly of him there so if they had the opportunity to finally bring him in, of course they'll be looking at it.

"There will be clubs across England and Europe on alert now, keeping an eye on the situation and looking to take advantage if that is a possibility."

What punishments are most likely for Man City?

Alongside the potential threat of immediate relegation from the Premier League, a number of alternative punishments have been discussed since the reports emerged.

Some have called for Man City to be stripped of their previous trophies, to face a significant transfer embargo, or to be hit with a hefty points penalty.

Meanwhile, Brown told Football Insider on 28 September that Man City could face relegation to League Two, a points deduction, and a significant fine all at once.

The governing body are now determined to "throw the book" at them, in an attempt to make an example and placate the demands of other clubs who have been left raging.

While Man City maintain that the ruling is not yet final, and are likely to file an appeal, a decision about their punishment is being made behind the scenes.
