Cody Gakpo became the Netherlands’ hero on Monday as he netted a brace to beat Uzbekistan 2-1 in their final friendly before the 2026 World Cup.

The Liverpool attacker scored twice from the penalty spot, including a 98th-minute winner to ensure his nation had some momentum going into the tournament.

Gakpo was called up to the Dutch squad for the summer tournament despite a mixed run of form in the Premier League.

Many fans had voiced their displeasure that the 27-year-old continued to start despite a run of one goal in 16 matches in all competitions.

Nevertheless, Gakpo sent a clear message to incoming manager Andoni Iraola on Monday that he can still play a part at Liverpool next season after an emphatic performance against Uzbekistan.

The winger ran the show, with the Central Asian side having no answers to stop the Liverpool star.

Cody Gakpo was excellent vs Uzbekistan

Gakpo had one of his best games in a Netherlands shirt to date on Monday as he completely overwhelmed Uzbekistan.

According to Football Insider's official data metrics supplier Statscore, he completed 79 per cent of his passes, had three shots, created four chances and had five touches in the opposition box.

The performance was excellent, and it will now be clear to Iraola that Gakpo could play a part at Anfield next season.

However, the attacker will need to ensure that these displays do not drop, as he looks to have a memorable World Cup with the Netherlands.

Could Gakpo be replaced this summer transfer window?

The concern for Gakpo will be the fact that he could be replaced this summer transfer window.

Liverpool are clearly targeting RB Leipzig star, Yan Diomande, who can also play on the left and right wing.

On top of this, the emergence of Rio Ngumoha has put further pressure on Gakpo, with Liverpool possessing one of the best upcoming talents in the world.

Therefore, this World Cup could be vital to Gakpo’s future as he looks to show Iraola why he deserves to be starting next season.

The performance against Uzbekistan will go a long way to helping this claim as he looks to return from the tournament in top form.
