Liverpool: Argentine media have their say on Alexis Mac Allister’s display vs Iceland
Argentina played their final match before the 2026 World Cup on Wednesday as they beat Iceland 3-0, with Alexis Mac Allister being one of the stars of the show.
The Liverpool midfielder came off the bench at half-time and put in a solid performance against the Nordic nation as Valentin Barco, Lionel Messi and Thiago Almada all scored to ensure the victory.
It was a vastly improved display compared to their 2-0 victory over Honduras on Sunday, which saw many players underperform.
As a result, the Argentine media was quick to heap praise on the 27-year-old, insisting that he was “key” to the team’s improved performance.
Now, Mac Allister will be hoping that this will help develop some momentum ahead of the summer tournament, where he looks to lift his second World Cup.
The midfielder had an inconsistent campaign at Liverpool, but will now be looking to put this behind him in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Alexis Mac Allister hailed for ‘spectacular play’ vs Iceland
Mac Allister appears to be in a tricky situation heading into the World Cup.
Despite once being one of the nation’s key players, his end-of-season form at Liverpool no longer guarantees him a starting spot, with the 27-year-old coming off the bench in the last two matches.
However, he did his chances no harm on Wednesday as he showcased just how good he is to head coach Lionel Scaloni.
Upon reviewing his performance, Bola VIP was quick to heap praise on the Liverpool star for impressing off the bench.
It read: “He came on at halftime for Barco and performed better than against Honduras.
“He created a spectacular play that ended with a shot against the post and was key to the team's improved performance.”
Who do Argentina face in the World Cup?
Argentina will begin their World Cup campaign on Wednesday when they face Algeria.
The South American nation are place in Group J, and will also face Austria on 22 June and Jordan on 28 June.
Mac Allister will be hoping that his recent performances have earned him a starting spot against Algeria in what is set to be a tricky match for the holders.
In the last World Cup, Mac Allister made six appearances for his nation and scored in the 2-0 victory over Poland in their final group stage game. This eventually helped him win a move to Liverpool in 2023.
