Paul Joyce is right, Liverpool player who’s infuriating Jamie Carragher will soon be axed
One Liverpool player is on the edge of becoming a regular on Andoni Iraola's bench.
The Spaniard has had a decent start to life at Anfield, but it could and should have been much better.
Liverpool were unbeaten until they faced league-leaders Manchester City over the weekend, and in truth that fact may have held if Ryan Gravenberch hadn't been sent off.
While results have been reasonable, plenty of performances have also lacked cutting edge.
Iraola has continued to put his faith in those struggling for form, but that patience cannot last forever.
But one player in particular is now running out of opportunities to make his case.
Jamie Carragher frustration speaks volumes as Florian Wirtz decision looms
Florian Wirtz has so far been a difficult player to watch at Liverpool. Nothing is coming off right for the German, and his confidence is clearly shot.
During live commentary of Liverpool's games, his performances have led to Jamie Carragher struggling to hide his infuriation, particularly in the last two outings against Bournemouth and Man City.
Speaking on Sky Sports' coverage, the Reds legend is often heard in disbelief over the German consistently giving the ball away and being unable to execute the final pass.
"I hate to say it again, and at the risk of repeating myself but Wirtz has to do better than that," said a clearly exasperated Carragher during Liverpool's win over Bournemouth before the international again.
As shared by The Times' Paul Joyce, underperforming big names is a topic coming up far too often in Iraola's press conferences.
Soon, it will be something the Spaniard will be unable to ignore, with Joyce reporting that Wirtz will end up being dropped soon if there is not a significant improvement in his performances.
How do Liverpool replace Wirtz in the starting XI
Dominik Szoboszlai should be put into the number 10 role, with Alexis Mac Allister and one of Ryan Gravenberch or Trey Nyoni partnering him.
Wirtz is losing the ball far too often with sloppy passes, and his indecisiveness leads to him releasing the ball far too late at times.
With a midfield spearheaded by Szoboszlai, the Reds would keep the much-needed legs required, while also having a player who is brimming with confidence.
The Hungarian is currently dealing with a minor hamstring issue, so it remains to be seen when he comes back into the fold.
But it would not be a shock if Wirtz began getting a run of appearances on the bench in the coming weeks.
