Liverpool are planning to sign a new right-back amid ongoing concerns about Jeremie Frimpong, sources have told Football Insider.

The 25-year-old has struggled to impress since his £29.5million move from Bayer Leverkusen last summer and has not yet nailed down a place in the starting XI.

Despite having started the first two Premier League games under Andoni Iraola, he has dropped to the bench for the last three, in which they have kept three clean sheets.

As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider's Transfer Insider podcast, Liverpool feel they can upgrade their options at right-back as Frimpong may not be good enough.

However, with other positions likely to take priority in the mid-season transfer window, the Reds could delay their plans and see out the season with their current options.

Concerns about Conor Bradley's fitness, as he continues his path to a return from injury, may also force Liverpool into the market as they weigh up their potential options.

Why are Liverpool concerned about Jeremie Frimpong?

Former Man United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider in April that Liverpool have been assessing right-back targets in an attempt to find a replacement for Frimpong.

The wing-back's defensive frailties have been exposed since his move to the Premier League, and there is a growing feeling at Anfield that his position could be improved.

Despite opting against a summer move, Liverpool are now preparing behind the scenes to land a new right-back, with the role becoming an increasing priority.

Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: "Right-back is probably another position that Liverpool do need to strengthen in with the issues they've had.

"It's not been the most stable position for Liverpool, with Jeremie Frimpong struggling to reach the heights expected of him when they brought him to Anfield last summer.

"His performances have been a concern, while Conor Bradley's injuries have caused them problems as well, so they've had to use other options in that position.

"It's something they could look at in January, but it isn't an urgent priority right now, so they could wait until the end of the season before they make a move."

Which right-backs are on Liverpool's radar?

Liverpool are now working hard behind the scenes to identify potential right-back signings, with a number of options already on their radar ahead of the turn of the year.

Scouts have been tracking multiple players both domestically and across Europe, while they are also keeping an eye on developing situations with big-name stars.

One of those includes Barcelona's Jules Kounde, as Football Insider revealed on 9 October that Liverpool are keeping a close eye on his situation at the Nou Camp.

The 27-year-old has dropped out of Hansi Flick's starting XI in recent weeks, fueling speculation that he could seek a move away, and placing high-profile clubs on alert.

While Barcelona currently have no plans to let him move on, it has been suggested that offers upwards of £60million could be enough to tempt them into a sale.
