Pep Guardiola has three senior goalkeepers to choose from following Manchester City’s dealings in the summer transfer window.

Man City signed Gianlugi Donnarumma from PSG over the summer, having agreed a £26million deal with the French champions.

The Italy international’s arrival saw James Trafford drop down the pecking order after re-joining Guardiola’s side from Burnley in a £27m deal in July.

Trafford is believed to be frustrated at Man City after spending the majority of the past few months on the bench.

Meanwhile, Stefan Ortega is available for a transfer heading into the January window.

Man City want to 'get rid' of goalkeeper

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the ideal solution would be for Ortega to join a “major club” in January.

Celtic have been linked with a move to sign Ortega, whose contract expires with the Manchester giants in June 2026.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Man City’s goalkeeper situation, Borson said: “I'm sure that they'd like to get rid of one of them, but not at any cost.

“I think the ideal solution, and I don't really understand why it hasn't happened already, is a major club comes in for Ortega and gets a very good goalkeeper for the second half of the season, including if they have to pay a small fee for him.

“I mean, he's a very good goalkeeper. I think it's a shame that Ortega has not found a club for the first half of this season. He's better than lots of goalkeepers around Europe.”

Ortega is yet to feature this season despite making 22 appearances in 2024-25.

James Trafford could get Man City opportunity after Gianluigi Donnarumma reveal

Trafford started the campaign as Man City’s goalkeeper ahead of former no.1 Ederson, who joined Turkish side Fenerbahce over the summer.

However, Guardiola immediately installed Donnarumma as his first choice following his arrival at the Etihad Stadium.

There could soon be an opportunity for Trafford to feature in the Premier League as Donnarumma is at risk of landing a one-game suspension, having picked up four yellow cards this season.

Donnarumma has kept seven clean sheets in his opening 17 games for Man City, while Trafford has registered two shut-outs in six appearances since returning to the club.
