Ibrahima Konate high wage demands "killed" contract talks with Liverpool, sources told Football Insider.

The 27-year-old has announced he will leave the Reds at the end of his contract this month after two-and-a-half years of negotiations failed to secure an agreement with the club.

Sources say Konate wanted an increase on the deal that he signed when he joined from RB Leipzig in 2021.

But Liverpool were not willing to meet the centre-back’s demands to have a higher package and instead offered him only what is said to have been a "similar" package to the one he was already on.

This, combined with additional costs to the player such as agent fees, eventually led to talks over a new deal collapsing.

As a result, Konate will leave Liverpool on a free transfer at the end of June, ending a five-year career in Merseyside.

The 2024-25 champions were willing to forego a transfer fee further down the line to avoid agreeing a deal that, were it to have run for four years, would have been worth over £40million.

Liverpool will find it tough to replace Ibrahima Konate

Konate had been a mainstay in Liverpool’s backline since his move from RB Leipzig in 2021.

Overall, the defender made 183 appearances for the Reds, which helped the club win five trophies, including a Premier League title last season.

Now, Andoni Iraola will face a tough task attempting to replace Konate in the current summer transfer window.

Despite Liverpool’s poor 2025-26 campaign, the 27-year-old was still a virtual ever-present in the starting XI, which helped the club to secure Champions League qualification.

In his final season at the club, Konate made 36 appearances in the English top-flight, and put in great performances in victories against Newcastle United and Everton, even scoring past the former.

Could Jarell Quansah return to Liverpool this summer?

Football Insider has exclusively revealed that Liverpool have no plans to exercise their buy-back clause and re-sign Jarell Quansah from Bayer Leverkusen this summer.

The centre-back left the Reds last summer and impressed in the Bundesliga this season.

This helped the 23-year-old win a place in the England squad for the upcoming 2026 World Cup under Thomas Tuchel.

However, Liverpool will not be replacing Konate with Quansah this summer, as they resist activating his buy-back clause.

Much of this is due to the Reds signing two centre-backs in the last two windows, in Giovanni Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet.

A centre-back signing is not thought to be a top priority ahead of next season as Iraola looks to reshape his squad.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Liverpool ever look to bring back Quansah as he looks to develop into England’s next top defender.
