Bayer Leverkusen centre-back Jarell Quansah is reluctant to return to Liverpool any time soon, sources have told Football Insider.

The Reds hold a buy-back clause for the 23-year-old, which is set at £59.5million, but the player himself has no intention of returning to Anfield.

Quansah’s future at Leverkusen has been under the spotlight in recent days, with interest from the likes of Real Madrid and Chelsea emerging.

Sources say that Quansah has “reservations” about any possible return to Liverpool, given how difficult he found it to secure regular football previously.

The defender made just four Premier League starts in the 2024-25 campaign, but has since taken his game to new heights after moving to Leverkusen that summer.

Liverpool have continued to keep tabs on his progress with a view to potentially triggering their clause, but it is not something that is on Quansah’s radar any more.

Jarell Quansah prefers new challenge

Liverpool have been linked with a return move for Quansah ever since he departed Anfield back in 2025, but they are now rapidly running out of time to make any possibility of a return a reality.

The Merseysiders are set to see their buy-back clause expire in June 2027, but Quansah has now been subject to a wealth of interest of late.

Arsenal were keen to make a move for the England international in the summer, while Chelsea have also developed an admiration for the Leverkusen star.

Even Real Madrid have shown an interest in recent weeks, as Quansah’s array of options for his next move continues to grow wider with every passing week.

The Anfield academy graduate would seemingly prefer the prospect of a new challenge altogether, rather than either staying at Leverkusen long-term or returning to Liverpool.

The move away from his boyhood club has truly ignited Quansah’s career, and he does not feel that it would be right for him to return.

Sources: Liverpool's stance on Giovanni Leoni loan move revealed

Liverpool’s Giovanni Leoni loan stance

Football Insider revealed on Monday that Liverpool have no intention of loaning out young centre-back Giovanni Leoni in January.

The 19-year-old has been subject to interest from Juventus in recent days, but Andoni Iraola is adamant that he will be needed in the second half of the campaign.

Leoni is now into the final stages of his lengthy recovery from a serious ACL injury, and there is genuine hope that he could be back in the matchday squad before the end of October.

With Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez both out of contract next summer, Leoni is seen as a key part of the long-term project, and someone that Liverpool can’t afford to lose.
