Liverpool have made extending Virgil van Dijk’s contract the number one priority, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed the Merseyside giants are trying to retain the 33-year-old for the foreseeable future.

The Netherlands international is out of contract at the end of this season, and Football Insider revealed that he is keen to remain at Anfield moving forward.

Van Dijk has been at the club since 2018, and he’s gone on to make 279 appearances where he’s scored 24 goals

The club captain is believed to have been pleased with what he’s seen from Arne Slot since he took over the team following Jurgen Klopp’s departure, and he’s remained a constant presence in Liverpool’s back line.

As things stand, the central defender will be able to discuss terms with foreign clubs from January and potentially sign a pre-contract agreement.

Football Insider revealed that the Premier League giants are willing to “bend over backward” to get a deal agreed with Van Dijk.

The Dutch defender has refused to publicly confirm his future decisions, leading to speculation about what his next move.

This is a growing concern for the club, especially considering that Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold are also out of contract after this season.

Retaining Van Dijk might be a top priority for the decision-makers at Liverpool, but well-placed sources have told Football Insider that the Reds still want to strengthen in this area of the pitch.
