London rivals to approach West Ham about last-minute bid for 28-year-old international - report

By Will Butcher

Chelsea will approach West Ham about signing Italy international Angelo Ogbonna as they look to reinforce their defence before the window shuts, according to a report.

Sky Sports Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed on his website that the 28-year-old is high on Chelsea’s radar in the final hours of the window.

It is said that the west London club will be making a request to sign Ogbonna in the coming hours.

Stamford Bridge manager Antonio Conte is a keen admirer of the defender from their time together at Serie A champions Juventus and the Italy national team.

Conte has asked the Chelsea board for a new midfielder and a centre-back before the transfer window ends, according to the report, and Ogbonna could join Inter Milan’s Marcelo Brozovic at Stamford Bridge.

Former Torino defender Ogbonna signed for the Hammers last summer in a deal worth £9.5million after penning a three-year deal but found it difficult to cement a first-team place with James Tomkins and Winston Reid providing competition.

Ogbonna, who has two Serie A titles to his name following his time at Juventus, has made just two appearances for the east London side this term, although he partnered New Zealand international Reid in the Hammers’ defence on Sunday as Manchester City won 3-1.

If a deal for the 12-time Italy international fails to materialise, Conte could make a sensational offer to sign PSG’s David Luiz which would see the Brazilian return to West London.

In other West Ham transfer news, this Championship club are looking to sign a teenage wonderkid who has been on the Hammers’ shortlist.
