Lorent Tolaj: Rangers race to sign Plymouth star heats up with English Championship twist
Lorent Tolaj’s services will be tough for Rangers to land this summer as a whole host of English Championship sides also eye a move.
Rangers have been watching Tolaj’s progress at Plymouth Argyle this season and could make a move to sign him in the upcoming transfer window.
The Swiss striker bagged 17 goals in 29 League One appearances for the Pilgrims but looks set to leave the club this summer after their failure to reach the play-offs.
While Rangers are keen on a move and Celtic remain interested, they are set to face fierce competition for his signature from several English second-tier sides, as I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast.
Tolaj remains on Rangers’ transfer shortlist, but a move will be tough to complete considering the widespread interest in his services.

Sources have revealed to Football Insider that Plymouth are set to demand £5million for Tolaj this summer.
He has been in electric form at third-tier level, so it should come as little surprise to Rangers that they will need to fend off interest from Championship sides.
| Fixture | Goal contributions |
| Northampton (a) | One goal, one assist |
| Port Vale (H) | One assist |
| Bradford (a) | One assist |
| Wimbledon (a) | One goal |
| Exeter (H) | One goal |
| Barnsley (a) | One goal, one assist |
| Bolton (H) | N/A |
| Cardiff (H) | Two goals |
Speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, I explained: “There’ll be a lot of competition for his signature. Celtic are interested as they have been since January.
“There’s been interest from a number of clubs abroad and I think probably half the English Championship would be interested in Tolaj as well if Plymouth are forced into selling.”
Tawanda Maswanhise could snub Rangers for a Championship club
The nature of Rangers’ struggles this season, as well as Danny Rohl’s previous managerial experience, means they will likely be competing with Championship sides for several targets this summer.
Motherwell striker Maswanhise is on their shortlist of striker targets following his standout season at Fir Park, with 22 goals scored in 42 games across all competitions so far.
Sources have, however, exclusively revealed to Football Insider that Maswanhise may choose to join a Championship club instead of moving to Ibrox in the coming months.
The Zimbabwe international could favour a return to English football because of the bigger wages on offer and a better pathway to the Premier League, with Tolaj potentially set to follow suit.
