West Ham midfielder Lucas Paqueta might never play football again if the verdict goes against him in his betting breaches case.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would be basically impossible for the Brazil international to ever play in the Premier League again if he is proven guilty.

Paqueta was hit with six FA charges in May over alleged spot-fixing surrounding yellow cards received in four Premier League games, but he has continued to deny the allegations.

An FA investigation was prompted after betting activity in Brazil on the 27-year-old receiving a yellow card in West Ham’s home game against Aston Villa last year.

The governing body kept the attacking midfielder’s phone for eight weeks last year while investigators analysed his call log, messages and bank records.

The Sun reported on 8 October the FA went back at a later date to ask Paqueta for more access to his phone to check further details, but he was unable to find it.

Paqueta released a statement on 17 October sharing his frustration at the “continued leaking and publication of inaccurate information in the press”.

The Brazilian has instructed his lawyers to complain to the FA about the leaks and wants the governing body to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter.

West Ham star Lucas Paqueta nervous ahead of verdict

Borson suggested Paqueta is likely feeling nervous because of the potential punishment he could face if he is found guilty.

“I’m sure he will have a fair trial,” Borson told Football Insider

“He’s probably very nervous because clearly if he loses, it’s going to be very hard for him to play again, certainly in the Premier League.

“I think that would be basically impossible.

“But he might not play again period if he’s done what has been alleged, so you can understand that he’s nervous about it.

“It’s his entire career.”
