'Ludicrous' - Exclusive: Whelan claims Bielsa could make big mistake over senior Leeds star

Noel Whelan says that it would be “ludicrous” to see Kalvin Phillips drop back into a centre back position next season after establishing himself as one of the most in-demand defensive midfielders in the Championship.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker and lifelong Whites fan says that the 23-year-old is currently one of the candidates to step into the heart of the defence after featuring there last season.

The midfielder played around 13 games as a centre-back for Marcelo Bielsa as other players were ruled out through injury and suspension.

However, Whelan insists that such a situation cannot rear its head again next season, insisting Phillips’ talents in the midfield would be a big loss to Leeds.

Whelan told Football Insider: “Right now, you’ve got to look at Luke Ayling but he’s injured. Bar that, you’re looking at Berardi, you’re looking at Kalvin Phillips.

“You would not want to pull Phillips out of that role that he plays, that deep midfield role, because that is why they’ve held onto him for so long, for that reason.

“Why would you want to pull one of the best defensive midfielders out of the Championship and put into a centre half role when Premier League clubs want him for that role? That would just be ludicrous.”

Phillips played 46 times for the Whites across all competitions last season, his stint at centre-back coming at the end of November and across all of December.

In other Leeds United news, Darren Bent has admitted he was stunned by a certain development at Elland Road this summer.
