Maeda 'worth weight in gold' after confirmed Celtic transfer news - pundit

Kevin Campbell has backed Celtic to sign Daizen Maeda from Ange Postecoglou’s former side Yokohama F. Marinos.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Arsenal and Everton star said goalscorers are “worth their weight in gold” when discussing a potential move for the 24-year-old.

According to The Times (22nd October), Celtic are confident of bringing the Japanese centre-forward to Parkhead in the January transfer window.

Maeda has contributed 18 goals and three assists in 31 J-League appearances this season.

Postecoglou knows the player well from his time in charge of Yokohama F. Marinos between 2018 and 2021.

Speaking on Celtic’s YouTube channel, Postecoglou remained coy when quizzed about a potential move for Maeda.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the reported interest, Campbell said: “If you can bring a goalscorer in, it will take the burden off the other strikers.

“Someone who can put the ball in the back of the net is worth their weight in gold.

“I am not surprised Celtic are interested in him. His record speaks for itself, even if it is in the J-League.

“Get him in and get him scoring goals. Postecoglou has already made it clear that there will be some extra bodies coming in in January. It looks like he could be one of them.”

Speaking on Maeda, Postecoglou said: “I can neither confirm nor deny. There is no doubt the Japanese league is one I know very well.

“Obviously I know Daizen well, I was the one who brought him to Yokahama F.Marinos.”
