Eddie Nketiah’s injury is worse than first feared by Leeds United and he is facing the prospect of being sidelined until well into December, Football Insider can reveal.
Marcelo Bielsa and his coaching staff initially thought that the prolific striker, 20, would not be absent for more than two weeks and he would be able to return after the forthcoming international break.
A Leeds source has told Football Insider that Nketiah has undergone further examination since breaking down in training last Friday and the club’s medical team now expect him to be out for at least a month and maybe more.
Nketiah has not only suffered what the club termed an abdominal injury but he has also sustained an injury to a more delicate area of his anatomy.
Marcelo Bielsa is set to provide an update at his official media conference ahead of Saturday’s home league fixture against Blackburn Rovers.
Privately, Leeds now expect Nketiah to miss their next four Championship matches and he would then need to prove his fitness ahead of the games against Huddersfield Town, Hull City and Cardiff City in the first two weeks of December.
Nketiah will also miss England Under-21s Euro qualifier against Albania on Friday of next week.
Losing Nketiah for a lengthy spell is a massive blow to Leeds, whose post international-break matches start with trips to Luton Town and Reading before hosting Middlesbrough at Elland Road on 30 November.
He has yet to start a league match for his loan club but was expected to do so for the first time against QPR last weekend before injury struck.
For United, the Arsenal loanee has scored five goals in all competitions, three of which have come as a substitute in the Championship.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that Newcastle United held an Elland Road transfer mission on Saturday.
