Man City may find themselves vulnerable to legal action from their rivals if Burnley win their lawsuit against Everton.

The Clarets suffered relegation in the 2021-22 season, finishing three points behind Leeds United and four behind the Toffees.

Despite breaking the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules (PSR) that season, Everton were only handed a points deduction in November 2023.

Burnley are now launching a lawsuit against Everton, claiming that they are owed compensation as a consequence of their relegation.

And that legal case could have knock-on ramifications for Man City, who are facing 115 charges from the Premier League for breaching financial fair play (FFP) between 2009 and 2018.

Man City rivals may look to make claims if Burnley win legal battle

The i reports that Burnley are seeking at least £50million in compensation due to lost revenue, thanks to dropping down to the Championship after the 2021-22 season.

Everton were handed a 10-point deduction that was reduced to six on appeal a year later which would have been enough to see the Toffees relegated in place of the Clarets.

The case could be significant for City's 115-charge verdict, as legal experts told The i that "if Burnley can prove that they lost income directly because of Everton’s breaches, it opens the door for future claims if some of the charges against City are proven."

Man City face nervous wait just as team begins to turn corner

It's fair to say that the looming presence of the verdict on the 115 charges brought forth by the Premier League has weighed heavily on City.

The summer of 2024 saw the Sky Blues take a frugal approach, and the knock-on effect has seen Pep Guardiola's side be elbowed out of the way by a gung-ho Liverpool side.

Man City spent big this summer on the likes of Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Cherki, and Gianluigi Donnarumma, but the team has still looked lethargic and perhaps a little distracted.

However, in the true style of a world-class side, Guardiola's side stepped up in the Manchester derby and looked back to their best.

But with another concerning update centred around off-the-pitch legal issues, the Catalan boss will need to ensure that his side remain fully focused on their football, or else the 2025-26 Premier League title will be destined to remain at Anfield.
