'Major work needed' - Eddie Gray makes Leeds transfer talks claim, gives damning squad verdict
Leeds United legend Eddie Gray has slammed the current squad for not showing enough quality this season and has hinted that there must be an exodus in the summer to reduce the squad size.
The Whites currently have 30 senior players on the books at Elland Road, including those who are out on loan.
Gray has now suggested that the issue that is facing the Leeds squad is that Victor Orta’s transfer management has left the team with quantity over quality and believes that the club are in need of yet another overhaul in the summer.
“There are too many here who aren’t going to make an impact here and now,” he said, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.
“The squad needs to be smaller and the average player needs to be better. The club went for quantity and without being disrespectful, there are too many who haven’t shown enough quality. The results and the performances don’t lie. They suggest there’s some major work needed.”
Gray also believes that although manager Paul Heckingbottom has been at Elland Road under two months, he will already have a good idea about his squad and claims that the club must hold transfer talks with him as soon as possible.

“From what he’s seen, I think he’ll have reached the conclusion himself that this side aren’t good enough,” Gray added. “He’ll be thinking about who’s good enough to take into next season and who isn’t but he’ll know that things have to change. The club need to sit down with him, find out what he wants and then act quickly.”

Gray has got it absolutely spot on. Orta has tried to improve this squad by signing way too many players rather than going out and getting a handful of more expensive options. Charlie Taylor, Chris Wood and Kyle Bartley are among those who were replaced by loan signings in the summer, all of which have failed to have made an improvement on their predecessor. It may be hard to move on all this deadwood that only signed contracts at Elland Road less than a year ago so there could be plenty of players moved out on loan.
In other Leeds United news, fans have urged the club to hire this two-time Championship-winning manager in the summer.
