Kieran Maguire issues surprise Man City-Newcastle prediction after boardroom twist

Man City and Newcastle United could form a surprise alliance to fight back against what they see as an unjust attack on gulf state investment.

So says finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the relationship between the two ultra-wealthy clubs.

The Premier League are expected to soon force through significant legislation regarding fair market value in related-party sponsorship deals.

Top-flight clubs raised fears at a recent emergency meeting that newly-minted Newcastle could secure inflated partnerships in the middle east.

The Daily Mail reported on 22 October that the pair, who are both financed by gulf states, feel they have been unfairly targeted in the sponsor row.

Maguire admitted that he is confused as to what new sponsorship laws would look like.

“Man City and Newcastle will certainly make their voices heard together,” he told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams.

“Given that Man City were one of the first to drop out of Super League, you’d think they would have some credit in the bank with the other teams.

“City abstained in the recent vote. Their deals have been signed off already, but it’s clear they don’t like the direction of travel in terms of sponsorship.

“But the thing that confuses me is that if you look at the Premier League handbook, a ‘fair market value’ adjustment is in place for sponsorship deals.

“So I’m not sure what the Premier League are going to do to make these changes.”
