Finance guru: Man City could 'cut ties' with sponsor amid Premier League investigation

Man City could potentially “cut ties” with 8xBet amid further questions surrounding the company’s legitimacy.

That is the view of finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about City’s relationship with the Dubai-based online bookmaker.

City signed a sponsorship deal with the company back in July but concerns quickly arose about its lack of transparency.

8xBet appeared to list fictitious staff members and there were a number of inconsistencies in the firm’s official account of its company history.

The Daily Mail reported last Saturday (12 November) that multiple new anomalies have now been found, with one source saying that 8xBet has deliberately fabricated its narrative.

The story takes place against a backdrop of an ongoing investigation into City’s finances by the Premier League.

Plumley does not anticipate that the Premier League themselves will force City to abandon the deal with 8xBet, but he does think it is possible that the club themselves will cancel the contract.

“Fulham have recently cancelled one of their sponsors who have been faced with similar accusations,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

On an individual basis, you would think the club would cut ties at some point if they continue to find these anomalies. It poses the question as to why they are signed in the first place.

The bigger issues in terms of the governance angle and the Premier League is that nothing has yet come of their investigations.

They will be aware of these things but it comes down to the club versus the league. I think in European football, in particular, it’s pretty clear where the power lies.

The last time UEFA tried to take City on, they lost quite spectacularly. This will be in the back of the Premier League’s mind.
