Kieran Maguire: Man City could now 'quietly dispose' of controversial sponsor deal

Man City could now “quietly dispose” of their controversial sponsorship deal with mystery company 8XBet.

That is the view of finance guru Kieran Maguire, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments surrounding the opaque Asian-facing bookmaker.

City announced a partnership with 8XBet in July, but the deal was quickly subject to scrutiny regarding a lack of clarity on its staff, who are all currently untraceable.

An investigation by Josimar, published on Tuesday (20 September), found that the company is being run by a PR firm from the United Arab Emirates, the home country of City’s owners where gambling is illegal.

City suspended a deal with cryptocurrency technology firm 3Key in November last year because of similarly hazy details about their operations.

Maguire suggests that the reigning Premier League champions could soon do the same with 8XBet.

“The Josmiar investigation into the 8XBet relationship does indicate that, at times, City are more concerned by the cheque than checking themselves,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“This relationship might have failed the smell test in a similar way to the blockchain one that we saw quietly disposed of last year. We’ll have to wait and see on that.

“City have been very coy and have not advertised this particular relationship in any great depth.

“It’s a bit like romance on a club 18 to 30 holiday in that it will be rapidly forgotten by both parties.”
