Man City could sign Bukayo Saka as Arsenal release clause suggested - pundit
Noel Whelan has suggested Arsenal could include a release clause in Bukayo Saka’s new contract amid reported interest from Man City.
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 20-year-old needs to sit down with Mikel Arteta to discuss how much the Gunners are willing to accept for him.
As reported by Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Monday (28 March), Arsenal are set to open contract talks with Saka this summer and are readying their opening proposal.
The winger, who is contracted until 2024, is reportedly happy with life at Arsenal.
However, ESPN reported back in February that Man City are keeping tabs on Saka with a view towards a transfer.
As such, Whelan admitted a new contract for Saka may come with the caveat of a release clause.
Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “He could have a release course while also giving him more money.
“There is no doubt clubs are looking at him. He is probably being looked at by Man City as well as other clubs. European giants like Barcelona, Real Madrid, all these sort of teams.
“If it’s something that he desperately wants, then he has to sit down with the manager and talk. Then they need to come up with a price tag that’s fair. A price they can go and buy another player with.
“Someone to strengthen the side and try to get Champions League football. There are so many variables they need to discuss when it comes to players.”
Saka has been a standout performer for Arsenal since breaking through the youth ranks.
The 14-cap England international has scored 21 goals and 27 assists in 121 games for the Gunners.
