Man City dealt 'colossus' blow after 'big' John Stones injury update - pundit

Manchester City have been dealt a “big” injury blow with John Stones ruled out against Leeds United through injury, according to Noel Whelan.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds striker insisted the 27-year-old has been a “colossus” for Pep Guardiola this season.

Speaking during his press conference on Friday (29 April), Guardiola confirmed Stones would miss Saturday’s trip to Leeds and that he is a doubt for the second leg against Real Madrid.

The England international limped off after 36 minutes against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Whelan insisted Guardiola would be “praying” Stones can make a swift recovery as they face crucial Premier League and Champions League games.

Whelan told Football Insider’s Russell Edge: “It’s a big loss because he’s been one of the most consistent players.

“We’ve seen that progression in the England side as well, how valuable he can be.

“He looks very confident now in that role and very easy playing at the back.

“He’s a colossus for them at times and I think he will be very much missed. You could see the confidence Pep Guardiola had playing him at right-back before some of the other players.

“He’s a big miss. Pep will be praying he’s back sooner rather than later. He is a crucial part of the jigsaw for Pep Guardiola.”

Stones has played 26 times across all competitions for City this season.

He missed City’s last Premier League game against Watford with an injury.

Guardiola has relied heavily on Stones in the Champions League, with eight starts in 11 games under his belt.
