Man City forced into £200m+ spending cut in new rule twist – sources

Man City will have to cut around £200million in spending if the Premier League votes in a new spending cap, sources have told Football Insider.

Top-flight clubs are set to meet on Monday (29 April) to discuss a proposal for a new spending cap based on the lowest revenue in the league.

The new rules put forward would cap all spending to a multiple of the lowest earnings from commercial and broadcast payments.

Last season, the lowest earnings went to Southampton – who pocketed £104million from broadcast and commercial payments from the Premier League.

It is understood that Monday’s meeting will discuss how high the cap should be with expectations of a cap being four or five times the size of the smallest earnings.

Man City budget set for major slash under new rules

The details are yet to be finalised but such rules would likely cap spending to around £550million each season for all top-flight clubs.

City broke the Premier League revenue record in 2022-23 with a turnover of £713million, and their overall expenses last season soared to £754million.

Therefore, City would be forced to cut their overall spending by around £200million if the rules are voted in next week.

Regulation changes are set to take place in the 2025-26 season when the current Profit and Sustainability Rules are set to be scrapped.
