Expert: Man City now have 'extra edge' after Ravi Mistry signs deal

Ravi Mistry will give Man City an “extra edge in the data department following his promotion to head of football insights.

That is the view of data expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and statistical analysis.

Training Ground Guru reported on Monday (9 May) that Mistry has signed a new deal to head up City’s world-renowned data insight department.

Mistry joined City in June 2020 as a football intelligence officer.

Dinnery explained Mistry’s new job spec and how he will ultimately give City an “extra edge” on the pitch.

“Data is very much in vogue nowadays,” he told Football Insider’s Adam Williams.

“We are looking to gain insights in every aspect. There is almost an information overload. The difficulty is, when you have that information, what do you want to do with it?

“You have to understand the data and how you interpret it. In this role, it is his job to educate, to give these insights in an easily digestible way. That way, you can make better footballing decisions.

“You need to deliver actionable insights. A lot of these guys who are working in data and coding are using complex mathematical models. For the average Joe, that goes over their head.

“So you need to deliver it in a way that can be digested. These guys are very impressive. It’s all about giving you an extra edge.”

City’s 5-1 win at Wolves on Wednesday saw them move three points clear atop the Premier League with two games to go.
