Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is considering making a move for Real Sociedad defender Inigo Martinez and Bayern Munich centre-back Holger Badstuber this summer, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claims that the Spaniard is determined to add one more central defender to the squad ahead of the new Premier League season.
The newspaper claims that Guardiola is seriously contemplating making an official approach for Martinez but he is uncertain whether the club can sanction another huge transfer as the defender’s release clause is £26million.
It is said that the City boss has been interested in signing Badstuber since the January transfer window and he continues to be an admirer of the 28-year-old.
Martinez has spent his entire footballing career with Sociedad and last season he demonstrated that he can also pose an attacking threat, scoring four goals and providing five assists in all competitions.
The Spaniard’s performances helped the La Liga side quality for Europa for the first time since the 2013-14 campaign.
Badstuber has spent 15 years with European giants Bayern where he has managed to make a total of 177 appearances for the club.
The German has enjoyed great success with Bayern, winning five Bundesliga titles and also being part of the side who clinched the Champions League trophy in the 2012-13 campaign.
Martinez currently has four years remaining on his contract whilst Badstuber is a free agent.
Football Insider verdict
After finishing his first full season at the Etihad Stadium without a trophy, Guardiola appears to have learnt from his mistakes and he is now rightly concentrating on improving City’s defence. Out of the two players mentioned, Badstuber would possibly be the best choice for the Spanish manager as he has vast experience playing at the highest level and Guardiola managed him for two years during his spell with Bayern. The German could also prove to be a positive influence on youngster John Stones who struggled for consistency during his debut season at the Etihad Stadium. City have already spent a huge amount of money this summer and although Martinez enjoyed a great campaign in La Liga last season, £26million is a lot for a player who does not have much international or Champions League experience.
