Man City transfer news: Pundit 'sure' on Riyad Mahrez joining giants this summer

Noel Whelan has insisted Riyad Mahrez will have “plenty of offers” from top European sides as his Man City contract enters its final year.

The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Citizens will look to block any potential move to a Premier League side.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato (25 April), AC Milan want to make Mahrez their marquee addition this summer – with PSG and Real Madrid also interested.

The Algerian ace is out of contract in June 2023, with no talks about a renewal in sight.

Mahrez is Man City’s top scorer this term – with 23 goals and nine assists in 43 games across all competitions.

Whelan insisted the forward is capable of playing for any of Europe’s top sides.

“He could grace any side,” he told Football Insider‘s Ewan Kingsbury.

“I love watching him. He’s one of those players who can get you out of your seat. He can create, he can score, he works hard.

“I think Man City would be seriously reluctant to let him move within the Premier League. They’d rather he go abroad, I’m sure.

“The likes of Real Madrid, PSG, Barcelona, the Milan clubs – that’d be an ideal destination for him.

They’d have to stump up Premier League wages, but I’m sure he’ll have plenty of offers.”

Mahrez has won two Premier League titles, three League Cups and one FA Cup during his four years with Man City.

Despite his scoring exploits, the French-born star has started only 13 Premier League games this term.
