Man United could sign 'great' Frenkie de Jong alternative after 'exciting' report - pundit

Kevin Campbell has backed Man United to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic if they cannot get a deal for Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong over the line.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Arsenal and Everton striker said Milinkovic-Savic, 27, is “a great option” for Erik ten Hag’s side.

United have been in advanced talks over a deal for De Jong but progress has stalled over the past two weeks.

According to Calcio Mercato (23 July), Milinkovic-Savic is on a list of alternative targets for the Red Devils.

The centre-midfielder has two years left on his contract in Rome.

When asked by Football Insider if the Serbia international would be a welcome addition at Old Trafford, Campbell said: “He’s a really top player.

“He has been linked with Arsenal and Newcastle as well. If Man United come into town and put the money down, I think Lazio’s ears will really prick up.

“Is it a risk? I don’t think so. I have watched him play. He is an exciting player.

“Yes, he has never played in the Premier League before. He might take a little bit of time to adapt but I’m confident he could cut it here.

“Frenkie de Jong is a player Ten Hag already knows. He knows what he brings and what he can get out of him so I understand why he would be the preference.

“But if they cannot get De Jong, Milinkovic-Savic would be a great option.”
